Synopsis
Uschi, a young woman living in East Berlin, gets to know “Lord“ and Hans while strolling about West Berlin. “Lord“ is quite crafty and, what is more, owns a portable radio, which right from the start impresses naive Uschi very much. But Hans, a young car mechanic who, unable to complete his apprenticeship, now washes fancy saloon cars in a garage at night, falls in love with Uschi. Later on, she falls in love with him too. With her feet not always too firmly on the ground, Uschi dreams of her “big chance“: she wants to become a model. This wish is not altogether far-fetched: after all, she was once allowed to wear dresses from her textile department at a fashion show. Hans tries to help her get into a modelling school, putting up quite a bit of his low wages. To scrape together the sum needed, he takes on an extra odd job at a scrapyard. Uschi spends a night at Hans´ s place. And when her parents reproach her for that, she leaves home and moves in with Hans in West Berlin. For the first time, she realizes how tough his life really is. He is on the dole. A more mature Uschi returns to her parents and introduces Hans to them.
