Foundation of PROGRESS Film-Vertrieb GmbH
August 1st 1950
In East Berlin, PROGRESS Film Vertrieb GmbH is founded under German and Russian supervision in the same year in which the founding committee of the Berlinale meets for the first time in West Berlin on the initiative of the American film officer Oscar Martay.
Rudolf Bernstein is the German director, G. N. Nikolajew the Russian. Predecessor was the soviet distributing company Sovexportfilm that cooperated with the newly founded DEFA film distribution since 1948. In fact, the merging of the two distributors under the umbrella of PROGRESS takes place on July 13 1950 but for pragmatic reasons the official day of the foundation is August 1st 1950.
The logo is a big P formed of filmstrips in a circle. Nikolajew is later appointed head of the Lenfilm Studio. The office is in Jägerstraße 32, in the building of the DEFA Studio for Newsreels and Documentaries.
