DEFA films are well established in the German TV landscape, as was shown in 2005 when the viewers of the TV station NDR voted their favourite films. Among the TOP 100: The Divided Heaven, Jacob The Liar, The Cold Heart, The Legend Of Paul And Paula, The Murderers Are Among Us, Naked Among Wolves, The Sons Of Great Mother Bear, Solo Sunny, The Trace Of Stones and The Kaiser’s Lackey. For many years we have been cooperating closely with public television stations and the private TV channels that preserve the classical film heritage with broadcasts of many feature and children’s films. On German TV there were more than 540 broadcasts of PROGRESS films in 2009. We also license films to TV stations in the whole world, especially within Europe.
Icestorm Entertainment is our most important partner for the DVD exploitation in the Home Video sector. Together we successfully realize the commercialization of the DEFA film stock. Highlights of Icestorm’s releases are video boxes of important DEFA directors such as Frank Beyer and outstanding actors like Manfred Krug, rediscoveries such as the DEFA silhouette films and the Science Fiction Special Edition. For the release of DEFA films on the international market, Icestorm cooperates with DVD providers for example in the USA and in Great Britain.
International Festivals on all continents show films of PROGRESS Film-Verleih’s repertoire. Museums and cultural institutes in Germany and abroad, galleries and memorials and - last but not least the Goethe Institutes as ambassadors of German culture worldwide - include DEFA films in their stock or organize film series. Cinematheques and universities do not only screen DEFA films, but make reviewing and academic working with them possible. Thus we were able to contribute to making DEFA productions known all over the world. One of our most important partners of non-commercial exploitation is the DEFA Film Library of the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the USA.
